So much for being the nation's brainiest city. Seattle has had a tough time regaining its status as the country's most-literate city, and a a list from Central Connecticut State University says we're still not there yet. Seattle ranked in the top 10 when it came to literacy rates, according to the ranking. But that blue ribbon? Guess we'll have to keep reaching.

Martha's Vineyard, home to many writers with national and international reputations – the late William Styron, David McCullough, Tom Clancy, Henry Louis Gates, Geraldine Brooks, and Edward Hoagland come to mind – has been able, until now, to support two independent bookstores.
